Student Life in Riga

The official language in Latvia is Latvian. Nevertheless, especially the young part of the population speaks English very well. The whole course of studies, therefore all seminars, courses, tests and oral exams are going to take place in English. You can get along very well with English in Latvia. You will also have to take a Latvian language course at the university, because in the clinical part of your studies, you have to make contact with the Latvian patients. Besides that, it is very advantageous to learn a language very well, in order to immerse yourself in the culture. It is very important to really live in the country of your studies and to set up a connection with the culture, which will last a lifetime.

Riga has an international airport, with direct connections to Germany and many other important European airports. The city has therefore a good connection and you will be there quickly. Within the city, you will have no problems to move along. There are many metro connections, busses and trains, with which you can safely reach every place in the city.

Riga is a big city and there are many diversified accommodation capabilities. You can find all sorts of accommodations, the offer is varied. We will gladly help you to find a suitable residence. If you do not want to live in an apartment on your own, or in a room in a flat-sharing community, you have the option to live in the student dormitory at the university. The price for a single or double room vary from 130 to 230 € per month. On every floor, there are several bathrooms and a washing room. Moreover, you have access to free Wi-Fi there. The university is 15 minutes away from the dormitory with public transport.

Riga is a dynamic university town, in which many young people are staying and where tourism prospers. Here you can witness many cultural experiences and the city offers many leisure facilities for all tastes. There are many bars, restaurants, clubs, concert halls, theaters, museums and galleries, which can be explored, in the time of the stay, in Riga. Especially the historic district is rich in offers. Due to the relatively cold winter in Riga, the lakes are freezing and you should absolutely try them for ice skating. In addition, the city has beautiful parks, which invite for recreation, going for a walk or go jogging. Besides, there are several festivals and cultural events over the year, which offer, additionally to the permanent facilities, much variety.

How much money you will need for a “normal” month in Latvia, is depending on the lifestyle. Our estimate is between 400 and 650€ per month. The prices are lower than in Germany, but not as low as few years back.
